At least in Cakewalk you first highlight the section you want to fade.
Then go to Edit/Scale Velocities. You will see a pop up. Mark the box for percentages and 
set the top at 100 and the bottom at whatever percentage fade you want. Example Six is 
100 to 50 percent.
